The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny
by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill translated by Steve Giles Three men of debatable morals create the city of Mahagonny somewhere in America's West. Drinking, gambling, prize-fights, and similar activities are the sole occupation of the inhabitants, and money rules. Mahagonny is threatened by a hurricane at the end of Act 1, which despite much anticipation and causing much distress simply bypasses the city. In Act 2 following the hurricane nothing is forbidden and various scenes of debauchery occur. Jenny and Jim try to leave but Jim cannot pay his debts and is arrested. Another character arraigned for murder, bribes his way out of it, but Jim has no money and is condemned to death for not paying for his whisky. How does one survive in a place where the only crime is running out of money? We will be reading the stage play translation of the opera's libretto. There is no singing involved in this Cold Read. BERTOLT BRECHT -- a German poet, playwright, and theatrical reformer whose epic theatre departed from the conventions of theatrical illusion and developed the drama as a social and ideological forum for leftist causes. STEVE GILES -- Steve Giles is Professor Emeritus of German Studies and Critical Theory at the University of Nottingham, UK. He has contributed to Brecht on Art and Politics (Methuen Drama, 2003) as well as authoring books on Modern European Drama and Critical Theory. |

- Cold Reads/Cold Brews is a monthly gathering of people interested in reading plays while quaffing a beverage of choice at a local public house.
- It is also a way that Latitude Theatre brings our programming out into the public of Seattle.
- Beyond that, Cold Reads/Cold Brews is the primary method that Latitude Theatre uses to evaluate scripts for future full productions.
- So... we gather, we read plays, we talk about plays, we sip a beer (or other tasty drink), we have some laughs, we have some fries, and in the end, we have fun together, while experiencing life through the words of playwrights from all over the world.
